The Science of Breathing

Pulmonary ventilation, or breathing, is the process of air movement into and out of the lungs. This movement occurs due to pressure differences between the atmosphere and the gases inside the lungs. Air flows from areas of higher pressure to lower pressure. Three pressures are involved: atmospheric pressure (outside the body), intraalveolar pressure (inside the lung’s alveoli) and intrapleural pressure (within the pleural cavity).

During inspiration, air is actively drawn into the lungs as a result of muscle contraction, particularly by the diaphragm. This increases the thoracic cavity volume and decreases intraalveolar pressure, allowing air to flow into the lungs.

On the other hand, expiration involves the passive process of air leaving the lungs. The relaxation of the diaphragm and elastic recoil of tissue decrease thoracic volume and increase intraalveolar pressure, pushing air out of the lungs.

The quality of the breaths we take, the penetration and exhalation of traumas, creating harmonious balances oxygenized cellular structure promotes carbon tolerance to maximum.

The Nature of Breathing

Once you learn to use the breath as a tool, you will have it for life to calm your nervous system and always guide you in the direct direction. Breath serves as a vital component of cellular respiration, facilitating the production of energy within our bodies. Through inhalation, we intake oxygen, which combines with glucose from digested food in our cells’ mitochondria, generating energy along with water and carbon dioxide. In essence, breath plays a pivotal role in fueling our energy production process. Breath comprises primarily nitrogen and oxygen, alongside a mix of other gases. During exhalation, we release a slightly lower amount of nitrogen, approximately 15% of oxygen, 4% of carbon dioxide and around 5% of water vapor. Oxygen fuels the majority of biochemical reactions in our body, while carbon dioxide aids in oxygen absorption, vasodilation and waste elimination.
